| Split Bench H x W x D" painted wood and steel, 1992 Currently on loan to William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ Split Bench is an oversized park bench that has been cut in half and re-assembled to look like it is breaking apart through its own energy. It was conceived a a big, funny, self-destructing bench, a reaction to too much stress and frustration in the city. A park bench is typically used to rest upon: lovers hold hands; people sit and enjoy the surroundings, talk to each other or read. Split Bench cheerfully subverts that idea. It is an anti-romantic send-up of an ordinary park bench. next |
