Split Bench

painted wood and steel, 1992
Currently on loan to William Paterson University, Wayne, NJ

Split Bench is an oversized park bench that has been cut in half and re-assembled to look like it is breaking apart through its own energy. It was conceived a a big, funny, self-destructing bench, a reaction to too much stress and frustration in the city.

A park bench is typically used to rest upon: lovers hold hands; people sit and enjoy the surroundings, talk to each other or read. Split Bench cheerfully subverts that idea. It is an anti-romantic send-up of an ordinary park bench.
